Free for Mac
Record your screen.
Not your mess.
ezHide hides everything on your desktop while you record or share your screen, except what you want people to see. Then it files the clutter away, neatly.
Open ezHide.dmg and drag ezHide to Applications. It lives in your menu bar.
Try it yourself
Your real desktop, with every file you meant to sort out later. ⌃⌥⌘D Icons disappear behind your background. Windows stay put. ⌃⌥⌘S Only the app you’re showing stays on screen. Chats, Dock and clutter are gone. Old files are filed into one archive, sorted by month and kind. One click to undo.
What it does
Three clicks between a messy desktop
and a clean take.
- 01
Hide Desktop Icons ⌃⌥⌘D
Covers every icon with your wallpaper or a background you pick. Your app windows stay exactly where they are.
- 02
Spotlight Mode ⌃⌥⌘S
Pick the apps to show. Everything else, including the Dock, other windows and even the menu bar, disappears. The cutouts follow your windows as you drag them.
- 03
Tidy Desktop
Files anything you haven’t touched in a while into ezHide Archive, sorted by month and kind. Daily auto-tidy if you like, and undo whenever you need it.
Backgrounds
24 painted backgrounds.
Hand-made landscapes for behind your windows, from misty watercolours to bold riso prints. Or keep your own wallpaper and nobody can tell anything changed.
Tidy Desktop
The “I’ll sort it later” folder, sorted.
Instead of dragging everything into one folder you never open again, ezHide files old items by month and by kind. Screenshots together, PDFs together, folders together.
The menu tells you what it’ll do before you click, like Tidy Desktop (8 Items), and Undo Tidy puts everything back.

Details
Small app. Sweated details.
-
Instant hotkeys
Press ⌃⌥⌘D or ⌃⌥⌘S mid-call and the change is instant. Clicking in the menu gets a quick, soft fade instead.
-
Works with any recorder
QuickTime, Zoom, Google Meet, Loom, OBS. ezHide draws real windows on screen, so whatever records your screen records the clean version.
-
Every display, every Space
Covers each connected display and follows you across Spaces. Plug in a monitor and it adjusts by itself.
-
Never deletes a thing
Tidy only moves files, into ezHide Archive on your Desktop. Undo Tidy puts every one back where it was.
-
Private by design
Sandboxed, and it never connects to the internet. It doesn’t need Screen Recording permission, and it collects nothing.
-
Lives in your menu bar
A small, colourful eye in the menu bar. No Dock icon, no windows. Starts at login if you want it to.
Questions
- What do I need?
- A Mac running macOS 14 Sonoma or later, on Apple silicon or Intel.
- Is it really free?
- Yes. Download it, drag it to Applications, done. No account and no trial.
- Why does Tidy ask for my Desktop folder?
- ezHide runs in Apple’s App Sandbox, so it can only touch folders you hand it. You choose your Desktop once and it remembers. Hiding icons and Spotlight Mode need no permission at all.
- Which files does Tidy move?
- Only items you haven’t changed or added in a while: a day, three days, a week, two weeks or a month, you pick. They go to ezHide Archive / month / kind (Screenshots, PDFs, Images, Folders and so on). The menu shows how many will move before you click.
- My own wallpaper shows up as a gradient. Why?
- The sandbox can’t read images from your Pictures folder, so ezHide falls back to a soft gradient. Pick one of the 24 built-in backgrounds, or keep Apple’s wallpapers, which it can read.
- Do notifications still show during a recording?
- Yes, banners are drawn by macOS above everything. Turn on Do Not Disturb before you record. The first few times you start Spotlight Mode from the menu, ezHide reminds you.
